This is an example brief. Its company, dates, budget, assignment and progress illustrate a project; they do not represent available or commissioned work. Proposals cannot be submitted.

The brief

The work and the intended result

We are about to request quotes for six aluminium spacers and mounting plates. This is a bounded document review, not a redesign: inspect the six PDF sheets, flag missing or conflicting dimensions and identify surface-finish or tolerance notes that need clarification. Deliver annotated PDFs and a prioritised issue list, followed by one 30-minute clarification call. CAD changes, supplier contact and verification of the assembled mechanism are excluded.

What you’ll deliver

  • Six annotated PDF drawings with numbered observations
  • An issue register separating missing information from optional simplifications
  • A short handover call explaining the points that should be resolved before quoting

Expertise needed

  • Experience reading manufacturing drawings for straightforward machined components
  • Concise comments that a designer can act on without interpretation
  • Ability to finish the review from the supplied PDFs without requesting a full product model
  • GD&T
  • Design for manufacture
  • Drawing review
  • Machining

A running start

What’s already in place

  • Six two-dimensional drawings with revision identifiers
  • A list of the parts’ intended functions
  • Material choices and the planned prototype quantities

Project milestones

From brief to handover
  1. 01

    Check the drawing set

Completed: confirmed all six sheets and their current revisions are included.

  2. 02

    Finish the marked-up review

Current: consolidate dimensional observations and separate blocking questions from optional changes.

  3. 03

    Explain the findings

Review the issue list together and ensure every observation points to a drawing number and location.

Working together

A shared definition of done

Confirm the deliverables, review checks and response window together so everyone knows what a successful handover looks like.

Suggested acceptance criteria

  • Every agreed deliverable is included in the handover, in the agreed file formats.
  • Assumptions, limitations and open questions are documented alongside the work.
  • The project owner reviews the work against the brief and returns one consolidated feedback list before approval.

When the scope changes

Record the requested change, its reason and its effect on deliverables, budget and timing. Both parties agree the revised scope in writing before the additional work begins.
