This is an example brief. Its company, dates, budget, assignment and progress illustrate a project; they do not represent available or commissioned work. Proposals cannot be submitted.

The brief

The work and the intended result

We need a small command-line tool for one stable CSV format with eight columns. It should check required headers, timestamp order, duplicated rows, unit labels and agreed missing-value rules. Each finding must identify the file, row and reason. The tool must leave input files untouched. Automatic corrections, a web interface and support for additional formats are excluded. One review of the rule wording is included.

What you’ll deliver

  • A Python command-line validator for the agreed eight-column format
  • Readable console output and a machine-readable findings file
  • Ten positive and negative test fixtures covering the agreed rules
  • A one-page usage guide with installation and exit-code examples

Expertise needed

  • Python scripting and test-fixture design experience
  • Careful handling of encodings, timestamps and empty values
  • No dependence on an online service or paid library
  • Python
  • Data validation
  • CSV processing
  • Automated testing

A running start

What’s already in place

  • An example export and an eight-column format description
  • Five known-good files and five files with identified problems
  • The required timestamp format and allowed unit labels

Project milestones

To shape together
  1. 01

    Freeze the validation rules

Confirm the eight-column contract and agree which findings should stop downstream processing.

  2. 02

    Implement the checks

Build the validator and verify that the supplied good and bad examples produce their expected outcomes.

  3. 03

    Deliver the utility

Demonstrate unchanged input files, useful row-level findings and a repeatable local run.

To agree before starting

A shared definition of done

Confirm the deliverables, review checks and response window together so everyone knows what a successful handover looks like.

Suggested acceptance criteria

  • Every agreed deliverable is included in the handover, in the agreed file formats.
  • Assumptions, limitations and open questions are documented alongside the work.
  • The project owner reviews the work against the brief and returns one consolidated feedback list before approval.

When the scope changes

Record the requested change, its reason and its effect on deliverables, budget and timing. Both parties agree the revised scope in writing before the additional work begins.
