This is an example brief. Its company, dates, budget, assignment and progress illustrate a project; they do not represent available or commissioned work. Proposals cannot be submitted.

The brief

The work and the intended result

A short conveyor extension adds photoelectric sensors, drive-ready signals and local controls. The mechanical equipment list and electrical drawings currently use different identifiers. We need one agreed mapping for 28 signals, a cable schedule for the added devices and a short functional description. The assignment includes a half-day walkdown and one revision meeting. PLC changes, wiring work and commissioning are excluded; unresolved field observations must be marked rather than guessed.

What you’ll deliver

  • A reconciled 28-signal I/O schedule with source-drawing references
  • A cable and device-tag schedule for the conveyor extension
  • A functional note covering normal transfer and the four agreed interruption conditions
  • An open-items list identifying who must confirm each unresolved point

Expertise needed

  • Practical experience tracing signals between equipment lists and controls drawings
  • Comfortable conducting a structured site walkdown
  • Clear revision tracking and disciplined handling of unknown field conditions
  • Automation
  • Electrical design
  • PLC programming
  • Documentation

A running start

What’s already in place

  • Equipment list, marked-up electrical drawings and current PLC I/O export
  • The proposed conveyor layout and device-tag conventions
  • Access to a site electrician during the scheduled walkdown

Project milestones

From brief to handover
  1. 01

    Complete the walkdown

Completed: recorded the added devices and checked the supplied drawings against the accessible field labels.

  2. 02

    Reconcile the signal mapping

Current: resolve identifier differences and prepare the 28-signal schedule with explicit open items.

  3. 03

    Review the contractor handover

Confirm that every added device appears in the I/O and cable schedules and close one revision round.

Working together

A shared definition of done

Confirm the deliverables, review checks and response window together so everyone knows what a successful handover looks like.

Suggested acceptance criteria

  • Every agreed deliverable is included in the handover, in the agreed file formats.
  • Assumptions, limitations and open questions are documented alongside the work.
  • The project owner reviews the work against the brief and returns one consolidated feedback list before approval.

When the scope changes

Record the requested change, its reason and its effect on deliverables, budget and timing. Both parties agree the revised scope in writing before the additional work begins.
